Beautiful Creatures, Poem, Poetry

Rebecca Gethin

What remains
is this husk of moon –
a cocoon printed with the leaf
it was once wrapped in –
an empty nest
spun by the fifth instar
before morphing into pupa
where over time it swelled
to gibbous before filling the space
and with serrated spurs
cut its way out
of a morning
ready for the next phase
when with green wings lifting
it signalled in pheromones from dusk
mating together by midnight.

Rebecca Gethin has written 5 poetry publications and has been a Hawthornden Fellow and a Poetry School tutor. Messages was a winner in the first Coast to Coast to Coast pamphlet competition.  Vanishings from Palewell Press will be published in June, 2020.
